Ninja Academy students like Konohamaru are taught the basic jutsu skills. Once they have mastered the needed skills, they are able to graduate and become actual ninja. However if the new Genin do not impress their Jounin sensei, they can be sent back to the Academy for further training.

Genin[Available]
Genin are the lowest of ninja skill levels. They possess a knowledge of all the basic ninja skills and will do lower C & D rank missions with their Jounin sensei. Once the Genin has successfully undertaken eight missions, they can be sponsored by their Jounin sensei for the Chuunin Exam.

Chuunin [Unavailable]
The Chuunin is the basic journeyman ninja of the village. These ninja can become field doctors or teachers. They were formerly Genin who were promoted for displaying excellent intelligence, strategy and combat skills in the Chuunin Exam. Chuunin have the equivalent rank of military captain, exhibiting strong stamina, knowledge and inner wisdom.

The Jounin are ninja who are highly skilled in all jutsu skills and arts. Ninja attain the rank of Jounin through official appointment. The Jounin generally serve as squad commander for mission operations.

Special Jounin are ninjas who have gained high Jounin-level skills in one area of ninja arts. These are ninja like Morino Ibiki, who is highly skilled at interrogation and torture. Ninja attain the rank of Special Jounin through official appointment.

Kage [Available]
The village Kage is the strongest ninja in the hidden village. The Kage serves as the pillar upon which the village stands and the strength a village presents to the other ninja countries largely depends upon the strength of the Kage in power. They have excellent chakra and stamina and know the most jutsu techniques. Only the Seven Great Shinobi Countries are allowed to call their head ninja by the Kage name.

Missing-nin are ninja who have abandon their village. These missing-ninja are consider traitor and are are hunted down by Shinobi Hunters. Many leave because of their hatred for their village, unsatisfaction, or other goal.

Ninja Hunters [Unavailable]
Each Hidden Villages has their own team of Ninja Hunters. Their main purpose is to hunt down Missin Ninja. After killing the missing-ninja, they would dispose of the body, leave no trace behind, take a sample (head or something) and bring back as clue. The dispose of the body is to insure that their Village Ninja secrets are to be study.

ANBU [Unavailable]
ANBU is known as the "Black Ops" in Viz Translation. They are chosen Chunin or Jonin who's mission is to assassinate any unwanted visitors in their village. They are also the village's protector. They are deploy in case of emergency (somewhat like the National Security of Defense). ANBU only disquised themself with a mask while on duty to distinguish themselves from normal ninja. ANBU also have a sword with them.

Medical Ninja [Available]
Medical-nin are ninja who specialize in medical treatment and use medical-oriented jutsu to heal others. Becoming a medic-nin requires a great level of intelligence and excellent chakra control, since medic-nin use chakra to heal injuries. Aside from their medical training, their combat training consists mainly of taijutsu skills, with emphasis placed on evading enemy attacks. This is because the death of the medic-nin could result in the death of the team. On dangerous missions, a medic-nin will usually be sent along with the team, to increase the survival rate of that team.

Courier Ninja [Available]
Courier-nin are ninja that deliver packages from one point to another. They take on extremely dangerous delivery jobs that others will not; these jobs can even be life threatening in nature. They use smoke to communicate with each other over long distances, and are a very determined group of ninja, taking the "postal motto" to new heights. They never deviate from their goals, and perfectly adhere to rules, regardless of what will happen if their package is delivered. When asked their name, they will use their designation number

Grand Sannin [Unavailable]
There exists a level of ninja who are of Kage level, but who are not presently a village Kage. This may be because of personal preference or the onset of aging. The three highly skilled Hidden Leaf ninja known as the Legendary "Sannin," or Legendary "Three Ninja" are such ninja. Sannin aren't bounded by their village.
