Orochimaru (大蛇丸, Orochimaru) was one of the Konohagakure's three legendary ninja or Sannin, and is known as the "Giant Snake" (due to his affinity to snakes). He is the primary antagonist for most of Part 1. He was the student that everyone believed would become the Fourth Hokage, but his hunger for power led him to commit dark experiments and practice forbidden jutsu (it has also been explained that his descent into darkness may have been caused by the death of his parents). After the Third discovers what has been going on, Orochimaru leaves Konoha and forms Otogakure in the Land of Rice. Oto is actually a group of numerous hideouts and bases scattered throughout the Land of Rice and other countries. He is responsible for countless immoral experiments and collecting many ninja with unique abilities in his numerous hidden bases. He wishes more than anything to find the ultimate body and improve himself to the state of a god. He has attempted to possess Itachi Uchiha, Kimimaro, Sasuke Uchiha and Guren's body, but all of the attempts have failed for various reasons (Kimimaro had an illness that prevented Orochimaru from possessing him, Itachi's powers allowed him to reverse the jutsu and sever Orochimaru's left hand, Guren was too late to make it to his lair so he had to chose a new body to save his life, and Sasuke also managed to reverse the jutsu and possess Orochimaru's soul instead). Note that the events with Guren only occur in the anime.

Orochimaru's name comes from the Japanese folktale, the Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya, which in turn was inspired by the legend of the Yamata no Orochi. Orochi means "Great Snake" and Maru is a common suffix in male names.

Orochimaru was originally a student of the Third Hokage as a part of a three-man team consisting of himself, Jiraiya, and Tsunade. From a young age, Orochimaru's stood out as a prodigy. His talent, brains, and determination was considered by his sensei a sight seen once a generation. Team Hiruzen mirrored Team Kakashi in nearly every way with Orochimaru being the indifferent genius of the group. Orochimaru was kind as a child and for a lot of his adult life, but later grew to become aloof, arrogant, and somewhat sadistic. His sadistic attitude was, presumably due to the death of his parents, which led him to study kinjutsu. Jiraiya theorized that Orochimaru went down this path in an attempt to forget about his painful memories. Sarutobi in particular had very high hopes for Orochimaru, often berating the clumsy Jiraiya and telling him he should be more like his teammate. After becoming the 3rd Hokage, Sarutobi hoped that one day Orochimaru would succeed him.

While Orochimaru's ambitions did include becoming the Fourth Hokage, his eyes were set upon goals quite alien to the ideals traditionally associated with the title and emphatically embraced by his teacher. Hiruzen knew that "a shinobi's true strength will manifest when protecting something important," and the Hokage's role is to love and protect the people of the village as if they were a family. For Orochimaru, however, Hokage was nothing more than a potential conquest on the way to what truly interested him - power.

Hiruzen hoped to make his student see the error of his ways, but as more time passed, it became evident that Orochimaru was a lost cause. This culminated in Orochimaru kidnapping his fellow Konoha shinobi as human guinea pigs. He experimented on them to develop techniques that would grant him immortality, as he had already decided that he would settle for no less than to learn all jutsu in the world (a task that would take much more than one human lifetime). When the many disappearances were finally traced back to Orochimaru, Hiruzen knew that it was his duty to kill him. At the time however, Hiruzen was unable to bring himself to kill his prized student for whom he had had such high hopes for. When Hiruzen finally retired years later he chose a student of Jiraiya's, Minato Namikaze, over Orochimaru as his successor, thus making Minato the Fourth Hokage.

Realizing that he had hit a dead end in his quest to become the ultimate being and therefore had nothing to gain from staying in Konoha, Orochimaru defected from the village and joined the elite criminal organization of Akatsuki. His old teammate, Jiraiya, tried to convince him to reconsider, but to no avail - he betrayed the village and the title of the 'Three Legendary Sannin' (although he is still known as one of the Legendary Three). Although the role Orochimaru played in Akatsuki is unclear, it is known that he was partnered with Sasori prior to his defection (the two apparently had great respect for each other when they were partners; Sasori also claimed that Orochimaru and him did a lot when they were partners in the organization). It was around this time that Orochimaru tried to steal Itachi Uchiha's body. Orochimaru was able to use his Living Corpse Reincarnation Technique, but Itachi used his Sharingan to reverse it and damage Orochimaru's body, causing him to leave Akatsuki to acquire a new body. Thus, he set his sights on Sasuke Uchiha. He eventually founded his own village, Otogakure.
For a while, Orochimaru left Konoha alone, plotting to destroy them when he was ready. The opportunity presented itself with the start of the Chunin exams. With this, Orochimaru saw both a chance to destroy his former home and acquire Sasuke Uchiha's body as his own. Having Sasuke's body would give him the Sharingan, which would aid him greatly in his ultimate goal.

Before the exams began, Orochimaru enlisted the help of Sunagakure, since his own village lacked the necessary strength to defeat Konoha. Already being weakened by their feudal lord, the village gladly accepted. Orochimaru later killed the Fourth Kazekage and assumed his place to get close to the Third Hokage. He also had the Kazekage's bodyguards killed off and has the Sound Four impersonate them.

During the second part of the Chunin exams, he entered the Forest of Death disguised as a Kusagakure ninja named Shiore as well as having two of his men impersonate Shiore's comrades (The origingal comrades were killed by Orochimaru. The bodies were disposed of outside of Konohagakure and their faces were stolen). During a confrontation with Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, he sealed Naruto's demon fox chakra and branded Sasuke with his Cursed Seal of Heaven. Orochimaru was discovered by Anko, but the exams continued due to his threat of retaliation. His Genin team (consisting of Dosu Kinuta, Zaku Abumi, and Kin Tsuchi) was sent to kill Sasuke, but the three were unaware that they were just measuring posts for Sasuke's power. The three of them were fought off by a combined effort from Sakura Haruno, Rock Lee, and Team 10, who happened to discover them while Sakura was holding them at bay. Sasuke's awakening of his Cursed Seal caused them to retreat.

During the preliminary round for the finals of the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru disguised himself as the jonin sensei for Dosu's team. There he watched Sasuke's performance against Yoroi Akado. While initially hoping Sasuke's emotional state would further release the Cursed Seal, he instead watched in shock at Sasuke's will being strong enough to suppress it, ironically making Orochimaru become awe-struck and desire Sasuke even more.

After Kakashi was able to seal way the mark on Sasuke, Orochimaru confronted Kakashi, complimenting him on how strong he had already become. He quickly noted being aware of Kakashi's Sharingan, making no attempt to hide his envy of Kakashi. While Kakashi tried to make Orochimaru reveal his plans, Orochimaru merely revealed that the new Hidden Sound Village was his, and that despite Kakashi's best efforts, Sasuke will eventually come to him seeking power.

During the final part of the Chunin exams, Orochimaru started his attack, hoping to unleash giant snakes outside Konoha while Shukaku was released from Gaara within the stadium. Things did not go as planned however because Gaara grew thrilled about killing someone as powerful as Sasuke and tried to transform into Shukaku before the signal was given. During the attack, Orochimaru attempted to assassinate the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. The Sound Four (disguised as the Fourth Kazekage's bodyguards) were thought dead after ANBU Captain cut them in two. They then come out of disguise and made a barrier so that Hiruzen couldn't escape and so ANBU Captain's squad couldn't aide him. Orochimaru even resorted to the Impure World Resurrection, summoning the departed First and Second Hokages to attack Hiruzen, sacrificing the lives of Zaku and Kin in the process. After a long and spectacular battle, the Third attempted to seal Orochimaru's soul with the Dead Demon Consuming Seal in the same manner as the Fourth Hokage had sealed the demon fox. Orochimaru, however, managed to impale his former mentor with his Kusanagi Sword, weakening the Third to the point that he could only seal the soul in Orochimaru's arms. Having lost the ability to perform ninjutsu, and feeling an agonizing pain, Orochimaru called for retreat. Orochimaru's forces were also repelled by the sudden appearance of all of Konoha's most powerful ninja, including another Sannin, Jiraiya, forcing a retreat. Afterwards, the Sunagakure broke ties with Orochimaru after discovering that he killed the 4th Kazekage.

Initially, Orochimaru planned to have his condition healed by appealing to his old teammate, Tsunade, who had since become a legendary medical ninja. He offered to revive her brother and lover, both of whom died in battle, in hopes that it would persuade her to cooperate. He also wanted to have the annoucement of Tsunades decision go uninterrupted and arranged for Kabuto Yakushi to assassinate Tsunades' assistant Shizune, after he noticed her angered expression during his first meeting with Tsunade. Though it looked as though he had succeeded at first, it turned out that Tsunade had actually intended to kill him rather than heal him. It was Kabuto who interfered before she could do so. Strangely, Orochimaru almost seemed hurt by the betrayal, and remarked that he really would have brought her loved ones back and promised not to interfere with Konohagakure, a rarity considering his usual self-centeredness and also learned from Kabuto that while he failed in his mission he learned that Jiraiya was nearby. During his following match with Jiraiya where the two were handicapped, after seeing Naruto fighting Kabuto, Orochimaru questioned Jiraiya as to why he would train Naruto who hardly had any ninja talent compared to Sasuke, and realizes that it was due to the fact that Naruto reminds Jiraiya of himself when he was a child. When Naruto defeats Kabuto, fearing Naruto's power and not wanting the Akatsuki to get ahold of him Orochimaru attempts to kill Naruto only to be stopped by Tsunade who then acknowledges herself as the fifth Hokage. After a large scale battle between him, Jiraiya, and Tsunade, in which all three of their largest summons were used, Orochimaru retreated. Since Tsunade wouldn't heal him, his only remaining option was to take a new host.

Though Orochimaru was correct in his assessment about Sasuke, who eventually sought him out for power, Sasuke did not arrive fast enough to become Orochimaru's new container. With the pain, bleeding, and gradual decay in his arms (reaching the point when soon it wouldn't matter whether Sasuke arrived or not), Kabuto proposed that Orochimaru take a new host. Kabuto then held a tournament of fights to the death between his prisoners and Orochimaru took over the body of the last man standing, Gen'yumaru. This, while getting rid of his condition, drastically delayed his plans for Sasuke (since he could only take over a new body about once every three years). When he took him over, he also noted that parts of Gen'yumaru's will and consciousness would remain in the new body's subconscious.

Eight Branches Technique (八岐の術, Yamata no Jutsu), a.k.a.: Hydra Technique

This technique allows Orochimaru to create a giant white serpent with eight heads and eight tails. The serpent is large enough to attack most things without fear, and may even be stronger than Manda. When using this form, Orochimaru can emerge from the mouth of one of the heads and use his Kusanagi Sword to attack, even without a host.

Name: Earth Clone Technique (土分身の術, Tsuchi Bunshin no Jutsu)

This technique creates a clone made of mud of the user. Since its made of mud, it can continue to reform and mold itself back to its original shape. Deidara uses a variation of the technique made out of clay. During his fight against Sasuke, Deidara uses it to trap Sasuke's arm within the clone's destroyed remains.

Five Elements Seal (五行封印, Gogyō Fūin; English TV "Five Pronged Seal")

This jutsu produces a powerful seal that is used to block or disturb the flow of chakra in a target. Orochimaru performed this jutsu to tamper with the seal on the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox. The original seal allowed the demon fox's chakra to seep out into Naruto Uzumaki, but the additional seal disturbs this, preventing Naruto from using the demon fox's chakra or even controlling his own chakra properly. This is because an odd-numbered seal creates an imbalance when placed on top of an even-numbered seal. When Orochimaru noticed that the seal was removed from Naruto when he was searching for Tsunade, he said that only a Sannin or someone at that level could remove the seal which suggests that it is very powerful.

Hidden Shadow Snake Hands allows the user to eject snakes from their wrist of sleeve, usually after a punching motion. The snake are used primarily to attack from a distance and, being snakes, can cause multiple wounds on the victims body, or hold them in place and can even poison the target.

Wind Release: Great Breakthrough is a technique that creates a large explosion of wind from the user's location, easily leveling everything in its path. A variation of the technique involves a smaller blast of wind which gets ignited with flame.

Vanishing Facial Copy Technique (消写顔の術, Shūshagan no Jutsu)

The Vanishing Facial Copy Techinique is a technique developed for spying with grisly effects. It allows the user to peel off the face of another and wear it over theirs sucessfully appearing like them and copying their voice. It however completely and permanently peels the face off the victim, killing them. Orochimaru used this technique to infiltrate the Chunin Exams, and again on the Fourth Kazekage to trick Sunagakure into attacking Konoha.

Orochimaru's Juinjutsu (大蛇丸の呪印術, Orochimaru no Juinjutsu; Literally meaning "Orochimaru's Cursed Seal Technique")

Orochimaru commonly uses cursed seals on his most powerful followers (even though he used it on many prisoners). To apply a cursed seal, Orochimaru needs to actually bite his intended target. Because he has sharp fangs and an extendible neck, this is a relatively simple task. The seal then appears somewhere on the target's body, and they subsequently lose consciousness. Sometime later, should they survive, they will awaken with the first level of the seal active and be enraged due to the seal's influence. The seals work by forcibly drawing chakra from the user's body, giving the user a chakra capacity beyond what they would normally be capable of, as well as increased physical performance as a result of the increased chakra capacity.

Kusanagi Sword: Long Sword of the Heavens (草薙の剣・空の太刀, Kusanagi no Tsurugi: Kū no Tachi; English TV "Grass Long Sword")

The Kusanagi Sword: Long Sword of the Heavens is the Kusanagi of Japanese legend. Orochimaru retrieves his Kusanagi by opening his mouth and extending a snake which then opens its mouth and produces the sword. Orochimaru was seen producing the sword handle first so he could use it freely, or blade first to attack his opponent instantly. The sword can extend its blade to attack from afar and it can cut through almost anything. The Kusanagi appears differently from the manga to the anime. In the manga, the Kusanagi looks more like a standard katana, while in the anime its a guardless, double-edged jian. It should be noted that Orochimaru's Kusanagi could not pierce Naruto in his Four-Tailed form.

Sasuke Uchiha refers to the chokuto he carries as a "Sword of Kusanagi", but it carries none of the unique attributes that Orochimaru's does.

Leech All Creation: Attack Prevention Technique (蛭万象・防火の術, Hiru Banshō: Bōka no Jutsu; English TV "Universal Assimilation Jutsu")

this jutsu, the user can merge with another object and take on its properties to avoid any damage. Orochimaru uses this to merge with a tree just before his battle with his former student, Anko Mitarashi.

Living Corpse Reincarnation (不屍転生, Fushi Tensei; English TV "Immortality Jutsu")

This jutsu, developed by Orochimaru, allows him to transfer his mind to someone else's body. If repeated periodically, it basically grants the user immortality as long as the user can find new host bodies and keep the host alive. Orochimaru can only perform this technique once every three years. It also seems that when the three years are almost over, he is forced to move into another host, as the previous one begins to reject him. Presumably, if he had a proper container, he could stay in the host for a full lifetime. The fact that he wants to prepare Sasuke Uchiha for the transfer before performing it seems to reinforce this. It is possible that Orochimaru can use the cursed seals of Heaven and Earth to make his transfers permanent, but is unlikely to be seen.

To perform this technique, Orochimaru reveals his true form, a gigantic white snake composed of smaller white snakes, by leaving through his current host's mouth. Orochimaru then swallows the new host and takes him or her to a different dimension, where Orochimaru envelops the mind of his victim. The snake body then dies, and Orochimaru's soul dominates the body (though the Sharingan seems to be able to negate and reverse the process against Orochimaru). The souls of the hosts are kept alive within Orochimaru, leaving them "still alive", in a sense (albeit suppressed), and when Orochimaru switches hosts, the souls leave with him.

Many Hidden Shadow Snake Hands (潜影多蛇手, Sen'ei Tajashu)

By increasing the amount of snakes summoned with the Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, the diversity of this ninjutsu is increased. The swarm of big snakes appear in an instant, each snake individually doing something like intimidating, diverting, or capturing the enemy in a cooperative attack. Without giving them the time to react, the enemy is entangled.

Using his Snake abilities, Orochimaru will release a torrent of serpents from his mouth. This wave will rise and rush towards his target. These snakes can also open their mouths to extend Kusanagi blades. They are obviously very powerful, as shown from the destructive amount of power in the shockwave Four Tailed Naruto used to destroy them.

Summoning: Triple Rashomon (口寄せ・三重羅生門, Kuchiyose: Sanjū Rashōmon; English TV "Summoning Jutsu: Rashomon: Three-Gate Deadlock")

The Triple Rashomon is an upgrade to the standard Summoning: Rashomon, which has its name suggest creates three Rashomon Gates. These gates serve the same function as the standard Rashomon Gate, but with triple the defense. The technique requires two summoning seals to be completed.

These gates are not invincible, an example of this was against Naruto's four-tailed transformation. While the gates are supposed to block any incoming attack, the four-tailed transformation managed to destroy all three with the Four-Tailed Fox Menacing Ball.


Summoning: Impure World Resurrection (口寄せ・穢土転生, Kuchiyose: Edo Tensei; Viz "Summoning: Worldly Resurrection", English TV "Summoning Jutsu: Reanimation")

The ninja will first sacrifice a living person to provide the vessel that the dead soul will inhabit. The dead body will then be encased in ash and dirt to resemble the soul of the person that was resurrected. When the ninja wishes to recall the souls, a portal will open in the ground and the caskets holding the bodies will appear. When the caskets open the bodies will be grey and in a state of minor decay, requiring a special seal to restore their appearance. At this point, the revived person remembers their former lives, and thus not under the users control. The same seal used to restore their appearance also wipes the soul of its free will, putting them under the users control. This technique can also be used to summon multiple people at once, depending on the amount of sacrifices and the chakra level of the user.

Summoning Technique (口寄せの術, Kuchiyose no Jutsu; Viz "Shinobi Conjuration", English TV "Ninja Art: Summoning Jutsu")

The basic form of all summoning techniques, this jutsu uses a contract, hand seals, and the user's blood to summon an animal or weapon from another dimension, which usually manifests once the ninja summoner strikes his hand against any surface, after which the specific summon will appear. As an alternative to the normal hand seals, the same contract that appears on the ground during the summoning can be drawn by hand and activated, producing the same result. The type of animal summoned is determined by the contract. The blood is used as a signature to make the contract, which can be written on a scroll or tattoo, valid. Once summoned, the animal can perform a task or help the user in battle.


Once complete, the revived is impossible to kill by normal means. If a limb is destroyed or removed, it will simply regenerate. To kill the revived, the soul has to be removed. When the Third fought against the revived First and Second Hokages, he had to create shadow clones and perform the Dead Demon Consuming Seal on both of them to kill them. In doing so, the bodies turned back to ash and dust, with the bodies of the individuals sacrificed to lay among the ashes.

Soft Physique Modification (軟の改造, Nan no Kaizō)

Originally developed for spying activities, this technique can be done after some surgery and actual body modification. The user dislocates their joints then controls their softened body with chakra, allowing them to stretch and twist any part of their body at any angle, elongating and even coiling around their opponent. This can also be used to make the user's body more malleable and snakelike. Orochimaru can do this without surgical modification thanks to his various forbidden jutsu. In addition, his version allows him to stretch his body parts well beyond their normal length.


Snake Authority Spell (Jagei Jubaku)

Snake Authority Spell is a technique used by Orochimaru and Sasuke. This jutsu can extend large snakes from their sleeves, which will coil around the target and bind them. The further addition of the user's murderous intent can weaken their target's resolve. With Orochimaru's unknown status and his removal from Sasuke, this ability may be gone.

After sustaining massive injury, or simply to escape from a seemingly inescapable attack, this technique allows the user to shed their bodies from their mouths, similar to how a snake sheds its skin which leaves their body completely recovered as if they've never been struck. The technique was the result of Orochimaru's many experimentations of his body to get as close to snakes as possible.
