Rock Music Bad for Teens?
There have been opinions and discussions between many people on whether Rock music such as "Alternative" or "Heavy metal" is bad for teenagers. I strongly believe that rock is actually helpful to to most teens. There are statistics proving that rock music can be good for teens. Most rock can relate to the teenagers' lives and their emotions. Plus, there are other non-rock related causes that changes in teens' behavior.
Statistics have been made to the controversy of alternative rock and teens. The term "Alternative rock" means new music or music with emotion. As stated from the article , "Music for Babies - Music for Teenagers", that " Researchers found that male adolescents reported feeling a release of negative emotions--in a positive, nondestructive way--when listening to heavy metal music" (Leeds p.6).The most up-to-date topic towards rock is that it encourages suicide. This information is wrong because Jennifer Copley states "sociology professor James Gundlach found higher rates of suicide among those who listen to country music" (Suite101 p.2).
Most teens go through hard times in life and rock has been there to relate to them emotionally. Some people may say rock is all about sex , drugs, and violence, but most rock is emotional and talks about troubles in life. The popular rock song," Youth of the nation", by POD tells teens to cherish life and help others in need because you never know what may come of you or that kid you helped. Teens often fear the future or suffer from a loss of a friend , but rock has been there to express these emotions to teens , helping them feel better and that there not the the only one. There have been times where I have been depressed and rock music always made me feel better.
There are other reasons why a teen may become as people say a "bad seed". School behavior can change many teens to becoming bullies or that the sad road of suicide from being bullied.
In the article , "Violent Behavior in Teenagers and at Schools" , states "Peer pressure can cause an otherwise calm teenager to become the aggressor in a violent situation" (psychiatric-disorders p.1). It also states that teens who often feel hurt from bulling may "retaliate back" towards others because of a "desire to get even".I believe that teens are at the stage where rebelling is easy to happen and people adapt to there environments as well. Doesn't that mean that teens change because of violent environments around them? The answer is clearly yes based on data collected from the"Violent Behavior in Teenagers" article.
Violence in teens because of rock? That is entirely improbable because of the reasons stated before. Statistics proving that rock music is actually good for teenagers. That most rock can relate to teenagers' lives and their emotions and there are more probable reasons for teenagers to turn violent or tainted.
